The Winery

About Soul Growers

Soul Growers represents the qualities its founders value most about the Barossa: shared wisdom, fresh ideas, mateship and a passion for making and enjoying great wine.

The winery grew from the friendship of Paul, Tom and Stu, who had previously worked together in the corporate wine world. They shared a belief that their future should be an uncomplicated, handmade and carefully nurtured winemaking enterprise centred on the growers who produce the Barossa’s fruit.

The Soul of the Barossa

Soul Growers sees the grape growers of the Barossa Valley as the true soul of the region. Their work, family knowledge and close understanding of individual vineyard sites provide the foundation for every wine.

The name reflects the history of the vineyards, the families who have cared for them and the handing down of knowledge from one generation to the next. The Soul Growers logo expresses the same idea, showing an older and younger generation working together over a historic bush vine.

The aim is to craft wines that speak clearly of place, people and soil. Rather than heavily shaping the fruit, the winemaking approach is to guide what nature provides and preserve the regional and varietal character of the Barossa.

The growers, families and community connected with Soul Growers

Wine, Food, Family and Mates

Soul Growers believes that wine should remain connected to the life surrounding it. Food, family, music, friendship and fun are treated as essential parts of the wine experience rather than something separate from it.

This relaxed philosophy is matched by a serious commitment to vineyard expression. The wines are intended to show the natural flavours of their varieties and the character of the Barossa sites from which the fruit is sourced.

Sustainable Grape Growing

Sustainability is central to Soul Growers’ approach in both the vineyard and winery. The business is working towards certification through Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, while the growers who supply its fruit are undertaking training in sustainable vineyard practices.

Vineyard methods include reducing or eliminating chemical inputs, planting cover crops to improve soil nutrients and structure, coordinating irrigation with natural rainfall and applying under-vine mulch to retain moisture and reduce soil temperatures.

These practices are intended to support healthier soils, more resilient vineyards and the long-term future of the family growers who supply Soul Growers.

Sustainability in the Winery

Inside the winery, grape residues are directed into several recycling streams. Some materials are used for distillation and biofuel production, while tartaric acid, grape seeds and skins may be recovered for food, health and cosmetic uses.

Grape stalks are mulched and returned to vineyards as natural compost. Winery wastewater is recycled and used to irrigate native plantation woodlots and surrounding vines, while rooftop rainwater is harvested for use throughout the year.

LED lighting has reduced internal lighting energy use, natural differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures are used to improve winery ventilation, and rooftop solar panels now supply more than 90% of the winery’s electrical needs.

For Soul Growers, quality wine must remain focused on the vineyard, the people behind it and the long-term health of the Barossa landscape.
