About Hart of the Barossa

Hart of the Barossa is a family-owned artisan wine brand created by vintners Alisa and Michael Hart. At the centre of the estate is the Hart block, planted in 1902 and recognised as the oldest certified-organic vineyard in the Barossa Valley.

Together, Alisa and Michael have preserved a small but remarkable part of Barossa terroir, producing wines shaped by family heritage, organic viticulture and a deep commitment to the land.

A Family Legacy in the Barossa

The Hart family motto, “Brave and Faithful”, reflects the courage of their earliest ancestors, who arrived in South Australia in 1845 with dreams of building a fruitful life on the land.

Among the first free settlers to acquire land in the untamed Barossa Valley, the family’s earliest home was a hollow tree on the banks of the North Para River, where the pioneering couple began their new life with seven children.

That same spirit of determination continues through the modern Hart family, who remain closely involved in caring for the vineyard and protecting its legacy for future generations.

The Hart Block

The Hart vineyard sits in the heart of the Barossa, where its mature vines and distinctive soils produce naturally intense fruit. Much of the vineyard work continues to be performed by hand, with careful attention given to the vines, the soil and the surrounding environment.

Rather than seeking uniformity, Hart of the Barossa allows each vintage and vineyard parcel to retain its own identity. The wines are intended to display the individual character of the site, combining pure fruit, distinct terroir and traditional handcrafted winemaking.

Brave, Faithful and Certified Organic

Hart of the Barossa’s philosophy is centred on sustainable farming so that the next generation can continue the family’s grape-growing legacy. The vineyard is farmed in biologically active organic soils without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or artificial fertilisers.

Their aim is to create bold, or “brave”, and authentic, or “faithful”, wines from the purest fruit nature can provide. This organic approach protects the vineyard environment while producing distinctive, full-flavoured wines that remain true to their Barossa origins.
