About Glaetzer Wines

The Glaetzer family’s connection to the Barossa Valley began in 1888, when the first members of the family arrived from Brandenburg, Germany, after a seven-week voyage to Port Adelaide. They settled in Nuriootpa and became some of the earliest recorded viticulturists in both the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley.

More than a century later, winemaker Colin Glaetzer established Glaetzer Wines with his wife Judith and their three sons. The family-owned label was founded in 1995, with its first vintage released in 1996, creating a dedicated home for small-volume, super-premium Barossa Valley wines.

A Family Winemaking Tradition

Colin brought extensive international and Australian winemaking experience to the family business. After completing agriculture and oenology studies at Roseworthy College, he worked across several respected wine regions before moving to the Barossa Valley in 1985. His career included creating acclaimed Barossa wines and earning recognition for both his winemaking and his contribution to the region’s cultural traditions.

Today, Colin’s son Ben carries the family tradition forward. After studying winemaking at Adelaide University and gaining experience in the Barossa and wine regions around the world, Ben returned to join the family company. His approach combines traditional Barossa techniques with a modern sensibility, producing wines that are powerful, elegant and unmistakably connected to their origins.

Old-vine vineyard in the Ebenezer district used by Glaetzer Wines

Ancient Vineyards of Ebenezer

Glaetzer sources all of its fruit from Ebenezer, a small subregion in the northern Barossa Valley. The district’s ancient dry-grown vineyards form a living connection to traditional Barossa viticulture, with exceptional fruit supplied by a loyal group of third- and fourth-generation grape-growing families.

The most prized parcels come from non-grafted bush vines aged between 80 and 110 years. These extremely low-yielding vines produce intensely concentrated fruit, supported by deep root systems that allow them to withstand the Barossa’s climatic extremes with minimal intervention.

Ebenezer’s sandy clay loam soils sit above a solid limestone layer, creating well-drained and demanding conditions that encourage deep root growth. Combined with the district’s warm, dry climate, these soils produce deeply coloured wines with concentration, softness, elegance and approachability, qualities that have become central to the Glaetzer house style.

Minimal-Intervention Winemaking

Glaetzer’s winemaking begins with the belief that quality is created in the vineyard. Ben uses a restrained, minimal-intervention approach designed to preserve the natural flavour and character of each parcel. Ferments are managed according to the condition and expression of the fruit, with extended time on skins used to build softness, palate structure and tannin development.

After pressing, the wines are transferred to French and American hogshead barrels for natural malolactic fermentation. They are then matured for approximately 12 to 18 months, depending on the vintage, before being assembled into distinctive Barossa wines with depth, balance and long-term cellaring potential.
