Gibson Wines

Gibson Wines was established in 1996 and draws on more than five decades of experience from its founder, Rob Gibson: viticulturist, geologist and winemaker. Rob’s early work as a geologist shaped the spirit of curiosity and prospecting that still defines the winery, with every vineyard treated as a place where something distinctive may be hidden beneath the surface.

Today, Rob works alongside his wife Anne and their son Adam, continuing a second-generation family story grounded in the Barossa. Together, they champion wines that are unmistakably connected to their soils, growers and origins: wines Gibson describes as Dirtborn Barossa.

A Family Rooted in the Barossa

Rob, Anne and Adam continue a family-led search for remarkable vineyards and fruit throughout the Barossa. Their approach combines practical vineyard knowledge, geological understanding and long-standing relationships with local growers, allowing each wine to reveal the character of its site rather than being forced into a uniform house style.

Authenticity and down-to-earth character sit at the centre of Gibson Wines. The family sees wine as a means of creating comfort, connection and shared enjoyment, while remaining true to the people and places responsible for each bottle.

Light Pass, Northern Barossa

Gibson’s home property surrounds an 1850s blacksmith’s cottage at Light Pass in the northern Barossa. The five-acre estate vineyard includes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Fiano, with part of the vineyard planted using the Gibson-Schulz trellis system, a method co-invented by Rob. Alternating vines are trained on low and high cordon wires, with the upper wire reaching almost two metres.

Light Pass sits slightly above the Barossa Valley floor at approximately 280 metres elevation. The family also tends the small Burkes Hill old-vine vineyard in Eden Valley, planted to Shiraz and Riesling, extending Gibson’s connection across two distinct Barossa growing environments.

Five Decades Forged in the Barossa

Alongside its estate vineyards, Gibson relies on relationships Rob has built over five decades with multigenerational grape-growing families across the Barossa. These connections provide access to exceptional parcels from different parts of the region, adding complexity and diversity to the finished wines while supporting an integrated and sustainable local wine-growing community.
